A 40-year-old Steens man has been charged with statutory rape after allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old girl.
Investigators with Columbus Police Department arrested Devione Williams, of 3303 Sand Road, on July 17, several months after the victim’s mother reported the crime.
A CPD press release said investigators received the report “earlier this year.” Chief Fred Shelton said there was a delay arresting Williams because they had to wait for results from physical evidence that had been sent to a crime lab at the time the victim’s mother reported Williams.
The Dispatch and CPD do not identify underage victims of sex crimes. However, the press release said the victim and Williams knew each other.
Williams’ bond has been set at $50,000. He is currently being held at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. His preliminary hearing is set for August 2 in Municipal Court.
