The Columbus Arts Council announces the opening of “A Fire You Can’t Put Out: From Jazz to Blues and onto Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth,” a solo exhibition of photographs by Alabama-based artist Cassandra Griffen. The public is invited to a meet-the-artist reception Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Rosenzweig Arts Center at 501 Main St. The exhibition, Griffen’s first at the center, will be on view until Feb. 28.
Many of Griffen’s works capture historical moments and encourage conversation on history as it relates to others who have used photographic medium and process to talk about the human experience. Over the last decade, Griffen has created a population of her human-interest photographs designed to invoke discussion about the rights of the underserved and underrepresented.
Griffen, who lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama, received two masters of science degrees from Mercy College and the College of New Rochelle. She has exhibited her work in galleries from New York to Texas, including the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
She is the 2015 recipient of the Joan Mitchell Creative Artist Living Legacy Award.
