A man accused in a 20-year-old Columbus homicide has been indicted for one count of capital murder.
A grand jury of Lowndes County Circuit Court indicted David Murray, 52, of Jackson, according to circuit court records. Murray was arrested in May after DNA linked him to the murder of 78-year-old Columbus resident Mack Fowler more than 20 years ago.
Family members found Fowler stabbed to death in his home in July 1996. DNA evidence collected from the scene was eventually entered into the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Combined DNA Index System 10 years later. Earlier this year, that evidence matched evidence taken from Murray in a separate arrest in Jackson last fall.
Law enforcement with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Murray in Jackson in May and took him to Lowndes County. He is currently being held at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center without bond.
Caledonia band director indicted
Also indicted in Circuit Court was former Caledonia High School band director David Chambers, 42. A grand jury indicted Chambers on three counts of touching a child for lustful purposes.
Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Chambers in February after parents and school administrators alleged Chambers had behaved inappropriately with students. Chambers resigned from CHS February 24, and the Lowndes County School District board of trustees accepted his resignation at the March 10 meeting.
Chambers turned himself in to LCSO in April after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He is currently free on $40,000 bond.
