A Columbus teen is accused of assaulting a Lowndes County Sheriff’s deputy with a car door.
LCSO deputies arrested Juvante Terril Burks, Jr., 19, of 901 11th St. South, No. 1, shortly after midnight Monday for a slew of charges, including felony simple assault on a police officer, as well as resisting arrest and failure to obey a police officer, both misdemeanors.
The incident started when a deputy attempted to pull over Burks for speeding on Highway 182, LCSO Capt. Ryan Rickert said. Though Burks initially pulled over, he took off in his vehicle again. Rickert said the chase included multiple deputies and went from Highway 182 to Sidney Loop when Burks stopped again. As deputies closed in around his vehicle, Burks opened his car door, hitting an officer, so that he could flee on foot.
Rickert said the officer was uninjured. Burks ran into a nearby residence where deputies caught him.
Burks was slapped with 10 charges in the incident, nine of which were misdemeanors. His bond for the felony was $7,500, and his total bond $11,020. He was released from Lowndes County Adult Detention Center later Monday after posting bond.
