Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District Superintendent Lewis Holloway will not appeal two misdemeanor simple assault convictions handed down in Oktibbeha County Justice Court in August, his attorney, Roy Carpenter, confirmed Thursday.
Holloway declined to comment on the decision.
Judge C. Martin Haug issued the two guilty verdicts after Holloway admitted to firing a handgun in the air during a 2015 confrontation with his neighbor, Roy Couvion. Couvion’s step-daughter was also present during the altercation.
Holloway argued he fired his weapon because he was threatened at the time.
He was fined $500 for each misdemeanor conviction.
Following his arrest in 2015, Holloway filed a simple assault charge against Couvion, which stemmed from an incident in May, in which he accused his neighbor of punching him and throwing him to the ground.
Couvion’s case was scheduled to follow Holloway’s last month, but it was continued due to a scheduling conflict for Couvion’s Columbus-based attorney, Rod Ray.
An Oktibbeha County Justice Court official confirmed Thursday that a trial date for Couvion has not yet been set.
Haug is also scheduled to hear the Couvion case.
School board members suspended Holloway for two weeks following his 2015 arrest. Following his conviction, they took no additional disciplinary action against the superintendent.
