District Attorney Scott Colom will announce the next step into the death of Ricky Ball Wednesday morning at the Lowndes County Courthouse.
Colom will hold a press conference at 11 a.m., according to a press release from his office. The conference is open to the public.
Ball, 26, was killed in an officer-involved shooting the night of Oct. 16, 2015. Former Columbus Police Department officer Canyon Boykin shot Ball. Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said Ball was shot twice — once in the upper body and once in the lower body.
The city council subsequently fired Boykin for violating CPD’s body camera policy and the city’s social media policy. Boykin has since filed a federal lawsuit against the city wherein he claimed that Ball pointed a pistol at him before he shot Ball.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation finished a prolonged investigation into the case at the beginning of June and sent the file to Colom. The district attorney has so far declined to release any findings from the file, saying that he does not want to jeopardize the investigation.
