Almost a year after voters approved a $44 million bond issue for the Lowndes County School District — money to be used for new construction and renovations through the district — many of the projects are nearing completion while one of the key pieces of the capital improvement plan hit an important milestone during Friday’s meeting of the LCSD board of trustees.
JBHM architect Joey Henderson asked for the board’s permission to advertise for construction of the district’s $11 million career tech center and set a bid deadline of July 28. The center will be built at a location on North Lehmberg Road that the board selected in November.
“We will be on schedule to have the career tech center completed in 2017 as we planned,” Henderson told the board.

The board also approved bids on a variety of other projects in the district, including a $43,805 bid for playground equipment at West Lowndes Elementary School, a $14,132 bid for a commercial washer/dryer at the West Lowndes High School field house, a $5,535 bid for ice machines at the West Lowndes High and Caledonia High field houses; a $51,891 bid for furniture at the new Caledonia Elementary School and a $19,500 bid to relocate a sewer line at West Lowndes Elementary made at the request of the county supervisors. The state will reimburse the district for that cost, Henderson said.
