Four separate car accidents in Lowndes County sent five individuals — including an infant — to area hospitals Friday, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
Woman with infant crashes on Highway 12
A woman and her infant passenger were transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle with nonlife-threatening injuries after an accident on Highway 12 Friday morning.
The accident occurred at about 11:24 a.m. near Seedtick Road, according to a MHP press release.
Jessie Raven Smith, 21, of Vernon, Alabama, was driving a silver 2003 Hyundai Sonata east on Highway 12 when the vehicle veered off the right side of the highway onto the shoulder. Smith attempted to correct the steering, but the wet shoulder pulled the vehicle into an embankment and the Hyundai flipped several times, the press release said.
Smith was wearing her seatbelt and her one-year-old passenger was restrained in a child-safety seat.
MHP is still investigating the accident.
Juvenile loses control of car in New Hope
Following another accident Friday morning, a juvenile whose car crashed in New Hope was sent to Baptist with unknown injuries.
The juvenile lost control of a 1998 Toyota Camry while driving south on New Hope Road Friday morning, according to a LCSO deputy. The Toyota ran off the road and overturned, hitting a parked car in the process and totaling both vehicles. The LCSO provided no further information.
Woman injured in car/tractor-trailer collision on Highway 45
A Columbus woman was sent to the hospital with minor injuries after MHP officers responded to an accident in Monroe County Friday afternoon.
The accident occurred at about 1:02 p.m. when a red 2014 Volvo tractor-trailer attempted a left turn off of Highway 8 onto Highway 25 colliding with silver 2003 Hyundai Accent traveling north on Highway 45, according to a MHP press release. The Hyundai became pinned beneath the box trailer being towed.
The Hyundai’s driver, Shaniqua Alexis Jones, 21, was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center, according to the press release.
The driver of the tractor trailer, Jess Lee Boykin, 63, of Brandon, was uninjured.
MHP is still investigating the accident.
Woman’s car rolls after veering off of Highway 45
A Columbus woman was transported to Baptist with moderate injuries after the vehicle she was driving veered off the highway on Highway 45 North Friday afternoon, according to a MHP press release.
Officers from MHP and the LCSO both responded to a call about the accident that occurred at about 3 p.m.
AllieMarie Lane Brooks, 21, of Columbus, was driving a black 2014 Toyota 4-Runner north on Highway 45 when the Toyota ran off the road. It drove into an embankment on the west side of the road and rolled several times before coming to rest, the press release said.
Brooks was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the release.
MHP is still investigating the accident.
