Shots rang out on a neighborhood street near the intersection of Fifth Street South and 14th Avenue South Thursday afternoon.
The Columbus Police Department received a call about shots fired at 12:58 p.m. and responded to the scene where neighbors reported hearing multiple shots and seeing a man running down the street.
Witnesses told police they saw a white Chevy Impala being driven by a black female and which had three black males riding in it, according to CPD Capt. Fred Shelton. The three men reportedly got out of the car and were chasing another black male and shooting at him. The man being chased ran toward Friendship Cemetery. He may have been shot in the thigh, Shelton said, but police have been unable to confirm that.
The alleged victim has not been found. Shelton said local hospitals have been notified to alert police if a gunshot victim comes in.
The driver of the Impala picked up the three suspects and the car fled in an unknown direction, Shelton said.
Police found that a vehicle and a house on the 1300 block of Fifth Street had both been shot multiple times. An occupant in the house was uninjured.
Shelton said that police have received calls about shots being fired on that stretch of the street before. He promised to increase patrols in the area, where he said many elderly residents live.
He also asked the victim to go to the hospital.
“If you’re out there and you’re hurt, please go to the hospital and get yourself checked,” he said. “We’ll get a statement from you, but most of all get yourself checked.”
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the CPD.
