A Columbus woman was injured in a fire in her apartment Thursday evening, apparently after falling asleep with a lit cigarette.
Anthony Colom of Columbus Fire & Rescue said city firefighters and police answered a call at approximately 8:37 p.m. at the woman’s residence at 601 Fifth St. N., Apt. No. 2.
“When they arrived, they had to break into the apartment to get her out,” Colom said Friday. “Apparently, she had been smoking and fell asleep. She had burns to both hands and, I’m sure, some smoke inhalation.”
Colom said the woman, who was the only occupant of the apartment, was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for treatment.
The fire was contained to the one apartment, Colom said.
