Award-winning editorial cartoonist Marshall Ramsey will deliver the commencement address to about 100 Mississippi University for Women graduates Friday at 2 p.m. in Whitfield Hall, Rent Auditorium.
Also known for his radio program and story-telling, Ramsey is a two-time Pulitzer finalist. His editorial cartoons are syndicated nationally by Creators Syndicate and have appeared in The New York Times, USA Today and The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson. He’s also the host of the weekly statewide radio program, “Now You’re Talking with Marshall Ramsey” and the TV show, “Conversations” on Mississippi Public Broadcasting.
Ramsey is the author of several books, including two cartoon collections, the short story collections “Fried Chicken and Wine,” “Chainsaws & Casseroles” and the children’s book “Banjo’s Dream.” His cartoons, photos, stories and posts can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.
Ramsey is an honors graduate from the University of Tennessee. His humble beginnings started with a job as a night custodian at Pope High School in Marietta, Ga. He “quickly learned that the worst moments in life are seeds for the best moments.”
A cancer survivor, Ramsey was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2001. He has been honored by both the Melanoma Research Foundation and the American Cancer Society for paying his survival forward. He actively promotes skin cancer awareness and sun safety through cartoons, speeches, skin screenings and a 5K race. He ran the Marine Corps Marathon to raise funds for melanoma research in which he raised $13,000.
Ramsey and his wife have three sons and their dog Pip. The family currently resides in Mississippi, described in his bio as “the best state for politics, storytellers, sweet tea and raising a family.”
