Mississippi University for Women will celebrate writing from Thursday to Saturday with its annual Writers Symposium and Welty Gala.
This year’s Symposium’s theme is ‘This Very Leap in the Dark’: New Beginnings in Southern Letters.
The event starts with a presentation by keynote author Moira Crone, who wrote the novel “The Ice Garden,” on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Poindexter Hall. Crone’s novel tells the story of a 10-year-old girl who has to take care of her baby sister while their mother suffers from mental illness.
Other writers featured this year include Sefi Atta, Ravi Howard, Kiese Laymon, Michael Kardos, Lisa Howarth, Steve Yates, Miki Pfeffer, T.R. Hummer, T.J. Jarrett, Randolph Thomas and Melissa Ginsburg.

Prior to the dinner, guests are invited to a reception where they can chat with other authors at the Symposium.
Gala tickets may be ordered online at muw.edu/welty/gala. Symposium events are free and open to the public.
