The Pines and Cady Hill Recovery Center invites the community to celebrate National Recovery Month at the Official Recovery Month Block Party at the center’s Main Street location in Columbus on Saturday.
The facility is a treatment center for individuals struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Pines and Cady Hill is a division of Community Counseling Services, which serves those with mental illnesses in Lowndes and six other counties. People come from as far away as Alaska for the care Pines and Cady Hill provides, according to Martha Allen, who is in charge of marketing and business development.
This year is the third year the center will host the Block Party, which is free and open to the public. The party is from 4 to 6 p.m. and will be held at 1011 Main St.
Families can come and enjoy food, live music and activities to celebrate and support anyone overcoming addiction.
There will be a meet and greet at 4:30 p.m. introducing the center’s clinical coordinator, Keenyn Wald, who began working at Pines and Cady Hill seven months ago. At 5:30 p.m., there will be a presentation on how addiction affects family and close friends and what families can do to help members who abuse substances.
“(The Block Party is) just about letting the community come and see.. what recovery is,” Allen said. “It’s doctors, lawyers, factory workers, family members (who struggle with addiction). And they’re living life, and they’re living full lives. It’s just important for people to realize that it’s not just jail and robbery and DUIs. There are just so many positive things that happen in recovery.”
Activities include face painting, karaoke, corn hole competitions, volleyball, hula hoops, a three legged race, croquet, sidewalk chalk, pumpkin painting and a dunking booth. The event is sponsored by Mitchell Distributing.
The center is also providing free alcohol and drug screening assessments with extended hours through the end of the month.
