Two men in Monroe County are dead after their boat capsized in the Tombigbee River earlier this week.
Winford Holmes, 69, of Bartlett, Tennessee, and Harold McCreight, 64, of Pontotoc, went fishing Monday night and did not return home. Authorities say crews from several agencies began searching the river Tuesday night after family members were unable to establish contact with the two men.
Authorities found their boat late Tuesday night, according to Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.
Holmes’ body was found about 8:30 a.m. Thursday. McCreight’s body was found around noon Thursday. Their bodies were within six or eight miles of the Becker boat ramp, where they are believed to have launched, Cantrell said.
Alan Gurley, the coroner in Monroe County, said the two died as a result of drowning.
Officials say recent torrential rain in the area had caused the river to swell, creating dangerous conditions.
