Deputies arrested an Oktibbeha County man Monday after he allegedly fired a weapon while law enforcement agents investigated a nearby auto burglary report.
James Hamilton, 70, of 5243 Highway 389, was charged with disturbing the peace, the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Tuesday.
Deputies were in the area about 7 p.m. Monday, when they walked to Hamilton’s residence to ask him questions about the reported auto burglary. Law enforcement agents reported Hamilton was uncooperative with the deputies’ investigation, Sheriff Steve Gladney and Chief Deputy Chadd Garnett said.
After deputies left the property, Hamilton allegedly shot into the air four times with a shotgun, Gladney and Garnett said.
By the time law enforcement agents established a perimeter around the property, Hamilton emerged from his residence and surrendered peacefully.
No injuries were reported from the incident.
“That got everyone’s attention real quick,” Gladney said. “You never know what you’re going to face out there in these days, but we’re fortunate to have resolved the situation the way we did.”
Hamilton was still in custody Tuesday afternoon, Garnett confirmed.
