JACKSON — The Mississippi Supreme Court has declined to review the case of a Columbus nurse convicted of abusing an elderly person left in her care.
Sherrill Culpepper pleaded guilty in 2012 in Lowndes County Circuit Court and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Prosecutors say Culpepper was accused of putting a hot flat iron on the skin of a vulnerable person.
Court records show Culpepper sought a new trial on grounds her attorney didn’t do a good job.
The Supreme Court on Thursday let her conviction stand.
The State Court of Appeals found in April that much of what Culpepper was arguing fell under legal strategy. The court says even if there were some deficiencies in her defense, Culpepper failed to show how her sentence would have been different.
