MOORHEAD — The spot where the east-west line of The Southern Railway in Mississippi intersected with the north-south line of the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad in Moorhead will be honored with a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail.
The unveiling is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Washington Street and West Delta Avenue in Moorhead.
The Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad, also known as the Yazoo-Delta, was known to locals as the “Yellow Dog.”
That’s “where the Southern Cross the Dog.”
The railway crossing inspired a variety of blues songs, including the “Yellow Dog Rag” published by W.C. Handy in 1914. It also became known as the “Yellow Dog Blues” when it was later recorded by artists including Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller.
