The main gate at Columbus Air Force Base was shut down Tuesday after a military dog alerted on a vehicle attempting to enter the base.
According to base officials, a military working dog was performing a routine vehicle check at 10:01 a.m. Tuesday when it alerted, or sat down, by a section of the vehicle. The Base Exchange, Commissary, Operation Squadrons and Security Forces buildings were evacuated and the main gate was closed to all traffic. The Tupelo Bomb Squad was notified and arrived on scene shortly before noon.
The driver of the vehicle was detained until the threat was given the all clear.
The gate reopened at approximately 12:15 p.m.
