VERNON, Ala. — City property cannot be used for fundraisers or parties, unless the city is a sponsor, according to a city policy ironed out Monday.
The Vernon City Council voted unanimously to keep the city’s insurance policy intact — without liability coverage for personal use of city property — at the counsel of the Alabama Municipal Insurance Company, which underwrote the city’s current policy. The policy bans the use of public property, like city hall, for fundraising events, unless sponsored by the city.
Two weeks ago, the city tabled the the decision because it lacked details from AMIC. Mayor Glenn Crawford said the city council supports fundraising efforts in the city, but the city isn’t covered should someone become injured on city property.
“When the yearly quote for Vernon was submitted,” Crawford said, “providing coverage for events such as this, had not been considered, which would place a great liability on the city should someone be hurt or injured. ”
In other business, the council received an progress update and a target date of operation for the first sawmill at K & S Lumber Company, which is located in the city’s industrial park. Crawford said officials from the company said that, barring any setbacks, the mill could be running by June. Additionally, Vernon Water & Sewer Board and the Vernon Industrial Board have agreed to absorb some of the out-of-pocket costs the city has for infrastructure improvements at the park.
