Lowndes County Circuit Court Judge Jim Kitchens is expected to make a decision on the fate of a Columbus woman accused of depraved heart murder.
Rennie Gibbs, 24, is charged with the murder for her alleged role in the 2006 stillborn death of her child.
Lowndes County prosecutors say Gibbs caused the child’s death by using cocaine during her pregnancy. Gibbs was 16 at the time of the child’s stillbirth. She was arrested and charged with depraved heart murder, the first woman charged with the crime in the State of Mississippi. Depraved heart murder is defined as an act that demonstrates a “callus disregard for human life.”
Gibbs is represented by local attorney Carrie Jourdan as well as Jackson attorney Robert McDuff.
Kitchens was scheduled to hear the defense’s motion to dismiss on Monday but due to a scheduling conflict with their expert witness, Jourdan said Kitchens will consider the case without oral arguments. He is expected to make a decision by the end of the week.
