The Lowndes County Narcotics Unit discovered an underground illegal gambling ring Wednesday.
Agents with the narcotics unit, Lowndes County Special Response Team, criminal investigations division and uniform patrol division executed two search warrants that lead to multiple arrests and the seizure of more than $40,000.
Carolyn Harris, 59, of 2310 Washington Ave., was arrested on at her residence and charged with illegal gambling and allowing the game of gambling to be conducted in her home. According to a press release issued by the sheriff’s department, an illegal game was occurring when agents arrived at the Harris’ home. Agents also executed a search warrant on 613 22nd Street South. In total, six people were arrested from the two search warrants.
Kevin Lamont Bailey, 29, of 1218 Seventh Ave. N., was arrested Feb. 5 at 2310 Washington Ave., by LCSO and charged with gambling and violation of probation. His court date is scheduled for March 4.
The names of the other suspects had not been released as of Friday morning.
On another unrelated offense agents with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department Narcotic’s Unit and deputies with the Sheriff’s Department Warrant Division conducted a traffic stop on Military Road near Lowe’s on Tuesday. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of close to an ounce of marijuana and over $700.00 in cash. Deanthony Sykes, 26, of Columbus was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
