MILLPORT, Ala. — The Millport Public Library will begin receiving more than 100 new books beginning today after receiving a grant from Weyerhaeuser Co., librarian Linda Ferguson announced at the Millport Town Council meeting Monday.
The Millport Library, housed in city hall, will receive 10 non-fiction and 90 fiction books during the next two months, Ferguson said. Weyerhaeuser, a timber company located in Millport, donated close to 40 of the new books, Ferguson said.
“The new books will range from easy readers on up to adult-level books,” said Ferguson. “We even have some cookbooks coming after patrons had requested them.”
Portions of the library’s collection was water damaged due to conditions at the previous location downtown, Ferguson said.
“The selection was old,” Ferguson said, “we were really in need of new material. We’ve been able to weed through some of them, pull out the ones that were torn and in disrepair and create room for the new ones.”
The library also received grants from the Library and Services and Technology Act. LSTA grants are matched up to 25 percent by the city. Ferguson has applied for additional LSTA grants to help fund the purchase of new computers and other multimedia devices.
Ferguson plans to start basic computer classes for adults.
