The public is invited to an unveiling of a new Mississippi Historical Marker on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. in Starkville. The location of the ceremony is the corner of Highway 12 and Louisville Street (old Highway 25), in front of the Walgreen’s store. As part of Mississippi’s recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the marker designates the importance of Union General Grierson’s raid that started in Tennessee, came through Starkville in April 1863, and continued through Louisville, Philadelphia and into Newton.
The brief program will include Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman, Dr. John Marszalek of the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and C. J. Johnson, past president of the Golden Triangle Civil War Round Table.
Immediately following the unveiling, activities will move to the Greensboro Center at the corner of Louisville and Greensboro Streets, just a few blocks north of the marker location. Musicians will perform music from the 1860s and Civil War reenactors (both Union and Confederate) will be on hand, with a Civil War-era cannon on display.
At 11 a.m. inside the Greensboro Center, Mayor Wiseman will present awards to winners in the High School Essay Contest, sponsored by the Ulysses S. Grant Association and the Golden Triangle Civil War Round Table.
Immediately following this presentation, there will be an Open Forum Discussion of Grierson’s Raid, with local area participants including Dr. John Marszalek, moderator, and panelists Jimmy Cole, Kimble Johnson and Dr. Bill Parrish. The panel will also take questions from the audience regarding this event in local history.
