STARKVILLE — Works from area high school students honoring the era of Shakespeare will be displayed at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership on Wednesday.
The Starkville Area Arts Council’s Art in Public Places Committee is hosting the show, which will run through February and includes the work of students from Starkville Academy. The show is running in conjunction with Shakespeare: From Page to Stage, a project organized by the Mississippi State University Institute for the Humanities, which will host several events this semester.
Art in Public Places Committee Chair Lori Neuenfeldt, said MSU theater professor Donna Clevinger originally approached the Area Arts Council with the idea of doing a show of specifically high school art that centered around Shakespeare.
“A lot of high school students have at least been exposed to Shakespeare a little, so we asked them to create things that were inspired by either his writing or his time period,” Neuenfeldt said. “It allows the students to show off their work, but it also allows the community to see the students’ capabilities.”
Neuenfeldt said she sent out letters to all of the area high schools, but got the most enthusiastic response from Starkville Academy, and more specially art instructor Robin Pigg.
Works can be seen at the GSDP starting Wednesday. Doors are open until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
A public reception for the artists is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 28th at the GSDP office on Main St.
