Former Lowndes County Supervisor Jim Terry was arrested by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office Thursday morning for violating probation.
Terry, 52, of 305 Burgundy Drive, was convicted of fraud in 2007 and sentenced to 13 months in prison after his conviction for misusing his county vehicle and county-issued fuel card for personal trips, including multiple trips to Philadelphia and Tunica casinos between Jan. 1, 2004 and Dec. 31, 2005.
During the 2007 Circuit Court trial, Circuit Court prosecutors also charged Terry with using the county fuel card to illegally purchase gas for others after a gas station security camera captured Terry filling up a friend’s truck.
Terry denied the misuse of the gas card and said he didn’t realize he was breaking the law or acting illegally.
He attempted to appeal his conviction, but the Mississippi Supreme Court refused to hear his appeal.
Although Terry was banned from Lowndes County public office, he lost his seat to current Supervisor Jeff Smith shortly before his 2007 trial began.
He was sentenced to 13 months in the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County and five years’ probation.
According to sources, Terry violated his probation by paying only $600 of the $6,000 in restitution he owed to Lowndes County.
