German Terrel Smith was last week indicted by a federal grand jury on one count possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Smith, 23, of 26 Subdivision Road, was arrested on May 26 when a a trooper with the Mississippi Highway Patrol discovered a .40 caliber Hi-Point firearm in his possession.
Smith, the son of Columbus mayor Robert Smith, was convicted of robbery in May 2008.
The case will now go before federal court. If convicted, Smith could face up to 10 years in federal prison.
