Lowndes County’s older residents next week will join an estimated 100,000 seniors across the nation to help promote active, healthy lifestyles through physical fitness, good nutrition and preventive care as part of National Senior Health & Fitness Day. As an official host site, the YMCA will hold activities May 30 at the Frank P. Phillips Memorial YMCA in downtown Columbus.
Registration for the free event, which is open to all, begins at 8 a.m. May 30, with the program starting at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m. Included will be exercises, such as Senior Yoga, Senior Stretch, Silver Sneakers, Zumba Gold and a preview of a new class for arthritis sufferers. Health testing will be available from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle; vision testing will be performed by the Columbus East Lions Club and Humana will provide information on their Silver Sneakers program. Other partners are Saum Chiropractic, Golden Triangle Planning and Development District, North Mississippi Acupuncture and Comfort Keepers.
“Older adults at all levels of physical fitness are encouraged to participate in National Senior Health & Fitness Day,” said Barbara Bigelow, YMCA community relations director. “Our goals for Senior Day are to make exercise fun, to increase awareness of the benefits of a regular exercise program for older adults and to encourage all older adults to take advantage of the many health and fitness programs offered in our community. It’s another way to help motivate our community into a healthier lifestyle.”
