Sherman Smith, son of Columbus Mayor Robert Smith, had his initial appearance in municipal court Wednesday. Smith pled guilty to misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon, for which he was fined $450 by Judge Nicole Clinkscales.
Smith was also arrested and charged with providing false information. The charge was retired to files, which means the charge was dismissed without prejudice, and the case could be retried if Smith is charged with committing the same offense.
Smith was arrested February 26 by Columbus Police Officer Joshua Vandiver after police responded to an alleged shooting at the Columbus Fairgrounds. Smith was not implicated or charged in connection with the alleged shooting.
In a separate incident, Smith was charged with contempt of court. Clinkscales dismissed the contempt charge.
