JACKSON — Mississippi is set to get $5.4 million in disaster aid from the Department of Agriculture.
USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the award as part of more than $300 million in emergency assistance to 33 states and Puerto Rico.
Mississippi’s share of USDA watershed and conservation emergency funds will be used to restore land and property damaged in floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters in 2011.
U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., says many projects have been on hold due to a lack of funding. Cochran says it will help areas such as Smithville in north Mississippi that was devastated by spring tornadoes.
