The Columbus-Lowndes Recreation Authority moves closer and closer to completing its neighborhood parks project.
CLRA Director Roger Short updated the authority on the project at Monday”s meeting.
“We completed the Anderson Grove Community Center and the New Hope Community Center. We are probably 50 percent complete on the Sim Scott Community Center and 30 percent complete on the Townsend Community Center,” Short said via telephone interview.
“We have the foundation slab set for the Crawford Community Center. We haven”t been able to start building yet. We”re making progress on everything.”
Short said the total cost, which began in November 2010, was projected at around $1.6 million.
“We”re going to come under budget on a majority of (the individual projects),” he said.
Construction of a soccer park on 72 acres of land near downtown Columbus also continues. The CLRA reported the project around halfway complete in June, but Short said he is unsure how close it is to completion now.
“It”s on the projected time line that the contractor will turn it over to us in September 2012,” he said.
The soccer park will house 10 soccer fields with sidewalks, a bridge over Moore”s Creek and boardwalk and underground utility lines.
Eventually, planners hope to add features such as a miniature waterfall, playground and pavilions, though those items aren”t funded and aren”t part of the project”s first phase.
Through parks and community centers, the CLRA operates classes, camps and senior citizen programs. The facilities also are used for family and community events.
