Leslie Sharp”s retrial for the murder of Christopher Cole has been set.
According to 16th District Circuit Court Administrator Carrie Kimbrough, Sharp”s trial will begin Sept. 26. Judge Lee Howard will again preside over the proceedings, and the trial will take place at the Oktibbeha County Courthouse, unless a motion is granted for a change of venue.
As with Sharp”s previous trial, the proceedings will take place outside of the normal circuit court schedule.
Sharp, 21, is accused of murdering Cole Nov. 10, 2008 on Kelly Road in Oktibbeha County. Sharp claims she shot Cole in self-defense after he pointed a gun at her and began pulling the trigger. She shot Cole seven times with a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol.
Sharp”s previous trial ended May 20 when, six days into the proceedings, a juror became ill during deliberations and required emergency medical treatment. Because the trial”s alternate juror had been dismissed and jurors are not allowed to be separated or released once deliberations have begun, Howard was forced to declare a mistrial.
