The man who drowned Monday at a Starkville motel has been identified.
A Starkville Police Department release identified the man as Marvin Dean Rowan, 54, of Shelby. Rowan and his fiancee had been living in a room at the University Motel on Highway 182 for approximately one month.
Rowan died Monday as he swam alone in the motel”s pool. His fiancee, another women and several adolescent children were all in his room and did not witness the incident.
Rowan”s body was spotted at the bottom of the pool and emergency services were called. OCH regional Medical paramedics dove into the pool to retrieve Rowan and attempted to revive him near the pool. Coroner Michael Hunt declared Rowan dead at the scene.
The drowning is still under investigation.
The incident marks Starkville”s second swimming pool drowning in less than a month. Mississippi State University student Sammy Lee Jackson, 19, of Rolling Fork, was found at the bottom of the swimming pool at his apartment complex on Louisville Street on May 15.
