A Starkville man is recovering in a Georgia burn unit following a Sunday morning fire.
The unidentified man, said to be in his late 60s, is a resident of Boardtown Village senior living apartments on North Montgomery Street. The Starkville Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a fire at Boardtown Village at 2:22 a.m. and had several units from Station 3 on the scene within five minutes.
The fire in apartment 306 breached the building”s attic, but did not spread to neighboring apartments. The smoke, however, caused extensive damage throughout the building.
The unidentified victim reportedly suffered internal injuries from breathing the smoke or other fumes resulting from the fire and had to be retrieved from the building by Starkville firefighters. He was taken to OCH Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga.
Leesha Morales, property manager for Boardtown Village, said she spoke with the man”s relatives later Sunday morning and was told he is in stable condition and being held for observation.
Morales said the man was a smoker but didn”t know if he smoked in his room.
She said all other residents were accounted for and no further injuries were reported.
The fire was located in an apartment at the back of the complex, several hundred feet from a fire hydrant located on the campus. SFD was on the scene until 8 a.m.
