An alleged drunk driver led police on a chase through downtown Columbus Sunday night, hitting several vehicles before crashing into a fence at Mississippi University for Women.
Kendrick Omar Brewer, a 34-year-old black male, was charged with a first offense DUI and a felony for fleeing in a motor vehicle. He was already wanted for an outstanding warrant in Columbus for contempt of court, and he was wanted by the Mississippi Department of Corrections and the Florida Department of Corrections for probation violations.
Brewer told officers he had tossed two pistols and “some drugs” out before he was stopped, but did not state where he had thrown the items. Police have not recovered any weapons or drugs, Chief of Detectives Selvain McQueen.
According to McQueen, a call was placed to 911 at 8:48 p.m. Sunday night reporting a brown vehicle driving erratically.
Columbus police officers spotted the vehicle driving in the opposing lane of traffic in the 800 block of 22nd Street South at the Columbus Housing Authority.
They proceeded to chase the vehicle to Fourth Avenue North, where the driver lost part of his tire and, according to McQueen, “pieces of his car began falling off.”
McQueen said Brewer ran a stop sign on College Street and hit two parked vehicles on 22nd Street, then ran the 15th Street South stop sign and crashed into the fence at MUW.
Brewer is currently being held in the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.
