A 76-year-old man died and his grandson was severely injured Friday, when his pickup was struck by an 18-wheeler in Monroe County.
Sam Willis Jr., of Wren, was in his Chevrolet S-10 truck with his 24-year-old grandson at about 12:45 p.m. when an 18-wheeler hit them just north of the Wren Fire Department on Highway 45.
Willis, who had not been wearing his seatbelt, was pronounced dead on the scene of multiple trauma by Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley. His grandson was airlifted in critical condition to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to Pioneer Community Hospital in Aberdeen.
