Most of Clay County”s elected officials have qualified to run for re-election this year, with the notable exception of Sheriff Laddie Huffman.
Huffman was unavailable for comment this morning. However, Clay County Sheriff”s Office Chief Deputy Eddie Scott has qualified to run for sheriff and sources report Scott likely would not run if Huffman were seeking re-election.
Huffman, who could not be reached for comment Thursday or today, has battled health issues during his latest term.
Edward Houston has qualified to run for sheriff against Scott. He is one of a handful of newcomers qualifying this year.
All five district supervisors qualified for re-election runs. Supervisor Lynn “Don” Horton qualified in District 1; Luke Lummus qualified in District 2; R.B. Davis qualified in District 3; Shelton L. Deanes qualified in District 4 and Floyd T. McKee qualified in District 5. As of press time Friday morning, only one other person, David Winfield in District 5, had qualified for the supervisors race.
Circuit Clerk Robert D. “Bob” Harrell Jr. qualified to run for reelection and had no challengers as of this morning.
County Comptroller Amy G. Berry qualified to run for the Chancery Clerk race, while Deputy Chancery Clerk and Youth Court Clerk Debra Myers qualified to run for the office of tax assessor/collector. Linda Hannah also qualified for the tax assessor/collector race.
Evan Carter Jr. qualified to run for coroner and Angela Turner Lairy qualified to run for county attorney.
Justice Court Judge Thomas E. Hampton qualified for re-election in District 1 and Judge Joe M. Taggart qualified for the Justice Court election in District 2.
Constable Sherman Ivy qualified for reelection in District 1 and Constable Charles “Lewis” Stafford Jr. qualified for reelection in District 2.
Clay County School District Superintendent of Education Mae Brewer also qualified for re-election.
