CALEDONIA — Caledonia aldermen voted Tuesday to change the water bill system for residents in and around the town to help offset the cost of a new water treatment plant and well.
The vote authorized town attorney, Jeff Smith, to petition the Public Service Commission for permission to begin charging residents in and outside the town a minimum of $7.25 up to 1,000 gallons per month, then an additional $7.25 per 1,000 gallons used after that.
Under the current minimum bill system, in-town residents pay $12 and outsiders pay $14 for up to 2,000 gallons of water, then an additional fee per gallon.
The change should bring in about $959,000 per year, about $1,000 more than the annual operating cost for the water department after the completion of a new well and treatment system, said Water Superintendent Benny Coleman.
Aldermen will organize a public hearing about the change within the next 30 days, said Mayor George Gerhart.
