A 36-year-old Columbus man died Thursday after his truck ran off Highway 45 and rolled in Lowndes County.
Cary M. Leverette was driving north on the highway, just north of Highway 373, when his red 1993 S-10 Chevrolet left the road and flipped at about 7 p.m., said Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant.
Leverette, who was thrown from the vehicle, was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital- Golden Triangle, where Merchant pronounced him dead on arrival of apparent blunt-force trauma to the head and chest.
The crash victim was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck, said Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol spokesman Brian Mobley.
The fatality is the second within 24 hours in Lowndes County.
Bobby Lee Shane Nabors, 25, of Columbus, was killed in a one-car wreck Wednesday when 24-year-old driver Lamarcus Davis lost control of his car, flipping it on Christian Circle off Highway 69.
Davis, of 205 Lawrence Drive, has since been charged with vehicular manslaughter while DUI.
He and another passenger initially left the scene but were found nearby by Lowndes County sheriff”s deputies. The other passenger was released without being charged.
Toxicology reports are pending for both Leverette and Nabors, Merchant said.
