Several students drew praise for their national and local achievements Monday at the September Columbus Municipal School District board meeting.
Fourth-grader Tijah McCrary, a student at Sale Elementary International Studies Magnet School, received top honors for his selection as a state finalist in the kindergarten-third grade category of Google”s “Doodle for Google” contest.
The contest invited K-12 students from across the country to draw their own versions of the Google logo. McCrary, the son of Tammy and Jerome Sherrod, turned the spotlight on the less fortunate. He drew his inspiration from charitable activities at school.
“We”ve been helping the poor with a lot of things,” said McCrary, before adding he would continue to help the poor. “I plan on donating old clothes I”ve already had and coins and dollars so they can have shelter and food that they can buy.”
McCrary was in Dawn Dawkins” third-grade class when he submitted the picture.
“He”s an outstanding student academically and personally. He”s very caring and reaches out to others,” said Dawkins. “My kids never cease to amaze me. They can accomplish so much.”
Several more students would be called to the front of the courtroom at the Columbus Municipal Complex to be recognized. The following students achieved perfect scores on state tests:
