The third annual Southside-Townsend Park Blues Festival will be held this weekend. There will be softball tournaments today and Friday, and musical acts will play all afternoon and evening on Saturday.
Six women”s teams will compete at the softball field at the Mississippi University for Women, and seven men”s teams will play at the Steve Gunn Field. There will be trophies for first, second and third places as well as T-shirts for the top two teams in each tournament.
There will also be plenty of barbecue, snow cones and other refreshments.
The Saturday blues and gospel lineup is as follows: Sanders and the Going Four, 4 p.m.; Mississippi Nightingales, 4:30 p.m.; Keith and Margie, 5:30 p.m.; Nathan”s Best Band, 6:15 p.m.; Johnny Coleman”s Swing Shift Band, 7:30 p.m.; and Sheba Potts-Wright, 8:30 p.m. The main attraction will be Latimore at 9:30 p.m.
The organizers of the event intend for the gathering to support family values and unity across the community.
“We”re trying to bond and have more fellowship and entertainment in the community,” said District 4 Supervisor Jeff Smith, who is on the planning committee. “We want to highlight our community and make people aware of the improved quality of life that we offer in Lowndes County during the holiday weekend.”
