Columbus Omnova workers continue to hold out for an alternate proposal from Omnova Solutions Inc. Until then, the workers are manning the gates during an indefinite strike period.
Omnova presented its “final offer” on a proposed contract to the United Steelworkers Local 748-L on May 15, the day their three-year contract expired. Workers voted 168-2 to strike and have been on strike since May 21.
Company and union officials declined to offer details of the proposed contract. However, an Omnova spokesperson said the company has had to make changes to promote efficiency in a down market. Union members are concerned with losing incentives, seniority and shift rights included in the previous contract.
Company officials have not been in negotiations with the local union since the strike began. And though both parties expressed interest in continuing negotiations, there is no word on when the company and union will resume negotiations.
Omnova”s Columbus plant is the primary plant for commercial wall coverings. Omnova produces wall coverings, functional coated fabrics and performance chemicals.

Locally, Omnova estimates it has a $23 million annual impact on the economy in taxes, wages, salaries and payments to local vendors.
Omnova”s Columbus plant employs 259 people, 174 of which are hourly wage workers, and is one of the area”s top 12 employers.
