STARKVILLE — Drivers who use Old West Point Road can expect delays and lane closures this week as work begins on a bridge north of Pat Station Road.
Crews will install sheet piling along the side walls of a bridge less than 1/4 mile north of Pat Station Road to prevent erosion, City Engineer Edward Kemp said. The bridge was falling steadily into disrepair, Kemp said, and over the past two months began to collapse into the creek below.
Work is expected to take seven days.
Construction also will commence on road and sidewalk improvements along Hospital Road between Hiwassee Drive and Jackson Street. Delays can be expected during construction.
The city and OCH Regional Medical Center partnered to install sidewalks along Hospital Road, with the hospital paying for the walkways in front of its property, and the city paying for the rest, Kemp said. Work on the road and sidewalk improvements is expected to last 45 days.
Cleanup operations also will continue on streets recently repaved in the city, including Jackson, Louisville and Montgomery streets, along with Yellow Jacket and University Drive. Sidewalk ramp repairs will continue on most project-related streets and new traffic signal loops will be installed.
Striping operations will begin after the conclusion of the sidewalk and traffic signal work.
Kemp, however, said drivers won”t encounter too many inconveniences.
“There shouldn”t be a whole lot of major delays going on next week,” he said Friday afternoon.
On Monday, a groundbreaking event will be held at the Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum for a storm water management project. The event begins at 2 p.m.
Also, city officials will hold a groundbreaking for the Hospital Road pedestrian project Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Professional Plaza and Hospital Road.
Citizens interested in the Pat Station Road extension project can attend a public meeting Monday at 6 p.m. in the city Sportsplex board room. Residents are encouraged to attend.
