County schools approve classes for coming year

Trustees of the Oktibbeha County School District started off the year with a brief business meeting Monday, approving of the course offerings for the 2010-2011 school year.

Superintendent James Covington presented the high school course selection/curriculum guide for the upcoming school year.

“These are the same courses offered as last year,” Covington said. “There are no new courses and no new graduation requirements that we are aware of.”

The county school district offers 84 credits for high school students to select from as they choose courses and meet graduation requirements.

The board approved per diem and travel requests as well as other standard requests that come before the board each month. They also approved the claims docket, the means by which the school district pays its bills. Covington said the only non-typical item on the docket was a $184,000 payment to Scholastic for the district”s Read 180 program. Scholastic Read 180 is a reading intervention program designed to improve proficiency.

“We have revamped the reading program in grades four through eight,” Covington said. “This is a one-time fee.”

Students are back in school today after a holiday break and will be given first semester report cards Friday.
