The Corps of Engineers announced Wednesday it will waive day-use fees for servicemen and their families.
“We began this initiative in 2006 to support and honor the men and women who have served the nation and armed forces,” said Steve Stockton, director of civil works for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
In Lowndes County, areas included in the event are the Stennis Lock and Dam east bank recreation area and the Dewayne Hayes recreation area.
Clay County”s Waverley Ferry Recreation Area also is included in the event, as is the Blue Bluff Recreation Area and the Becker Bottoms access area in Monroe County and the Raleigh Ryan boat ramp in Pickens County, Ala.
There are more than 2,400 Corps-operated recreation areas nationwide.
The Corps is the largest federal provider of outdoor and water-based recreation in the nation. The Corps hosts about 372 million visits each year at its lakes, beaches and other areas, and estimates that 70 percent of the U.S. population lives within 50 miles of a Corps lake.
