A pedestrian and a cyclist were struck by cars in separate incidents Monday morning during the first day of fall classes on the campus of Mississippi State University.
In the first incident, a pedestrian was struck while walking from McCarthy Gymnasium to Montgomery Hall on Creelman Street.
The student was not seriously injured and walked to the campus health center.
In the second incident, a cyclist was struck while cycling on Barr Avenue in front of Stafford Hall.
MSU Police Chief Georgia Lindley said the cyclist declined medical treatment.
“He told the driver he was OK, but they did file a report,” said Lindley.
The drivers in both cases face no consequences, said Lindley, noting minor incidents such as these are common for the early days of each semester as students rush to classes dealing with distractions such as cell phones or text messaging.
A third incident Monday afternoon saw a campus police car and a student vehicle both totaled following a collision on Bully Boulevard.
Lindley says the campus police officer was unharmed and the two passengers in the other car were treated for minor injuries resulting from air bag deployment.
