Mississippi State University could soon receive federal funds for agriculture and energy research.
U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran on Tuesday announced the Senate Appropriations Committee has passed the FY2010 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration Appropriations Bill. It still must be approved by the full Senate.
If passed, Mississippi State University would receive $839,000 in funding to support development of a plant-based gasification process to produce liquid fuel.
The university also would receive $797,000 to continue the study of crop genomics to improve agriculture production.
“This legislation is important to Mississippi,” Cochran said in a statement. “It continues federal investments in projects to improve and expand the agricultural base in our state. In addition, the bill supports rural development and farm loan programs, which are useful in an era when commercial credit can be hard to obtain for producers and rural Mississippi residents.”
