Master gardener Jim McKell will teach marketgoers how to build an earth box — just right for a one person small garden — at this Saturday”s Starkville Community Market.
The event will be sponsored by the Mississippi State University Extension Service.
“We”re very happy that Mr. McKell is devoting his time and energy and volunteering to do this demonstration,” market co-founder Tammy Tyndall said. “This is something that is going to be a manageable, moveable, portable garden. We”re really excited that he”s coming.”
To build an earth box, McKell says you”ll need two plastic storage boxes, a bag of potting soil, 1 cup of 13-13-13 fertilizer, a small piece of black visquine or a weed barrier and two tomato plants, which shouldn”t total more than $10.
Meanwhile, vendors at Saturday”s market will offer tomatoes, okra, zucchini, blackberries, blueberries and peaches, among other fruits and vegetables.
The vendors tend to sell out quickly. “Come early,” Tyndall said.
The market opens at 8 a.m. and will close at 11 a.m. — an hour earlier than previous markets to beat the heat — every Saturday through September.
