One man was arrested and another is being sought by police after an early morning Saturday wreck sent three people to the hospital, according to reports released Tuesday by the Columbus Police Department.
Jerry Sharp, 56, of 520 11th St. N. in Columbus, was arrested Saturday shortly after a dark green, trailer-pulling Toyota pickup truck he was riding in was struck by a Cadillac at the intersection of Fifth Street South and Main Street.
The accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, a few minutes after CPD officer Thomas Pearson stopped the truck for speeding on Highway 45 North in front of the Carl Hogan Toyota dealership.
While Pearson was checking information on the truck”s driver, 44-year-old Richard Williams, of 1010 Third St. S. in Columbus, Williams and Sharp sped away from the traffic stop.
Soon after Pearson began pursuing the Toyota, other CPD officers notified him the truck had been struck by a Cadillac at the intersection of Fifth and Main streets after the truck ran a red light at the intersection.
After the Cadillac struck the truck”s trailer, the truck detached from the trailer, overturned and slid upside-down nearly an entire block before coming to a rest in front of the WCBI-TV building at the intersection of Fifth and College streets.
Williams and Sharp got out of the truck and ran down an alley behind Huck”s Place restaurant before police caught and arrested Sharp and charged him with one count of failure to obey a police officer. After Sharp was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle and treated for minor injuries, police transported him to the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held on an investigative hold until his June 17 court date.
As of Tuesday, officers had not located Williams. Upon arrest, he will be charged with felony counts of fleeing or eluding a law enforcement officer and possession of stolen property for stealing the Toyota, according to the CPD.
Although no one sustained life-threatening injuries in the wreck, Sharp and as many as two other victims were transported to the hospital, according to Columbus Station 1 firefighters.
Further details of the wreck are pending a Mississippi Highway Patrol investigation.
