STARKVILLE — The city of Starkville will be abuzz this weekend as organizers prepare for Super Bulldog Bash and the Cotton District Arts Festival.
The Super Bulldog Bash will take place on the campus of Mississippi State University and feature everything from tailgating and athletic events to live music and pig cooking. Events begin Friday morning and will continue through Sunday evening.
The Cotton District Arts Festival, put on by the Starkville Area Arts Council, takes place all day Saturday, not far from MSU. A total of 106 artisans will line University Drive, Maxwell Street and Page Avenue, compared with 82 last year. Several stages are planned, as well, and will offer patrons a “variety” of musical choices, said Candy Crecink, executive assistant at the Starkville Area Arts Council.
Festival organizers also have several “villages” planned. The villages will have themes, such as the Celtic Village, where patrons can find Celtic music and other activities. “Chaucer”s Village” will feature literary activities, including readings of author Geoffrey Chaucer”s works, and a “poetry slam,” where patrons can read their own creations.
A children”s village will feature activities geared toward younger visitors and “Phiddipedes Village” will be full of health-related activities.
Visitors also can expect food, dancing, a street chalk art competition and dancing, among other things. A 5K run is planned for Saturday morning.
“There really is something for everybody,” Crecink said.
The Arts Festival, which is in its 14th year, recently was named one of the top 20 events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society. Additionally, the American Bus Association named it one of the top 100 events in North America.
Roughly 22,000 people attended the festival in 2008, Crecink said, but organizers this year are expecting 30,000-40,000 because the Super Bulldog Bash will take place on the same weekend.
