Gameday Capsule: No. 17 MSU vs. Arizona State

No. 17 Mississippi State (3-0) vs. Arizona State (3-0), T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas 

 

BROADCAST INFO: 10 p.m. on ESPNU. 

 

ARIZONA STATE SO FAR: The Sun Devils started the season 52nd in KenPom but were so bad in the double overtime win over Cal State Fullerton that they dropped to 59; then they were so good against McNeese State (80-52) and Long Beach State (90-58) that they climbed back up to 50th. 

 

MSU SO FAR: Three dominant wins over Austin Peay (95-67), Hartford (77-59) and Long Beach State (79-51), all of them at home. This will be MSU's first time playing somewhere other than Humphrey Coliseum. 

 

ARIZONA STATE PROJECTED STARTERS 

 

G Remy Martin, Spot., 6'0", 170 -- 9.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1 spg, 33.3 percent from the field and 18.2 percent from 3, Pac 12 co-Sixth Man of the Year last year. 

 

G Luguentz Dort, Fr., 6'4", 215 -- 21.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 2.3 spg, 58.3 percent from the free throw line, 4-star prospect from Canada. 

 

G Kimani Lawrence, Soph., 6'7", 200 -- 15 ppg, 5 rpg, 41.7 percent from the field and 42.9 from 3-point range, no turnovers in 26 minutes in his last game. 

 

F Romello White, 6'8", 220 -- 7.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 8-16 from the field, 6-6 from the free throw line in his last game.  

 

F Zylan Cheatham, Sr., 6'8", 201 -- 13.3 ppg, 10 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1 bpg, 8 turnovers in 3 games, San Diego transfer originally from Phoenix. 

 

MISSISSIPPI STATE PROJECTED STARTERS 

 

G 1 Lamar Peters, Jr., 6'0", 185 -- 10 ppg, 5 apg, 5-for-21 from 3-point range (23.8 percent), 4 assists in each of his last two games. 

 

*G 0 Nick Weatherspoon, Soph., 6'2", 195 -- 9.7 ppg, 2.3 apg, 11-18 from the field and 3-7 from 3-point range, injured early in the last game. 

 

G 11 Quinndary Weatherspoon, Sr., 6'4", 205 -- 21.3 ppg, 4 rpg, 3 spg, 5 steals and 2 blocks in 3 games, 60.5 percent from the floor and 11-12 from the free throw line.

NOTES: KenPom gives MSU a 67 percent chance of winning with a projected final score of 77-73....Arizona State won a tournament in Las Vegas last year, beating Kansas State and Xavier to win the Continental Tire Invitational....MSU is outscoring its opponents in the paint by an average of 42.6-25.3....Arizona State's offensive number are good in almost every area: 11th nationally in offensive rebounding percentage, 32nd in free throw percentage, 36th in 2-point FG percentage -- but 290 in 3-point shooting percentage at 27.8 percent....The Bulldogs have scored at least 20 points in turnovers in each of their first three games.
